"cnn newsroom" continues right now with ashleigh banfield. >>> nice to see you, everyone. it is 11:00 on the east coast. 8:00 on the west coast. and it has come down to this. after thousands of speeches and hundreds of ads, after hundreds of millions of dollars bankrolling months and months of nonstop campaigning, the two main candidates for president in 2012 are tied. see for yourself. the final preelection cnn polling could literally not be closer. president obama supported by 47% of likely voters. mitt romney supported by -- excuse me 49% of likely voters. mitt romney supported by 49% of likely voters. other late polls look very, very similar. one shows them tied at 48%. if you look way down at the bottom there. the others give the president somewhere between a one and three-point edge, depending on which one you look at there. but margin of error sefrg. the race to reach the voters on election eve is just so competitive. mitt romney is racing from florida in the morning to new hampshire tonight with stops in virginia and ohio in between.

"the new york times" is now reporting this morning that the investigation actually began some months ago. but, again, the questions continue to mount. it wasn't until election night that the director of national intelligence, james clapper, was informed that this was all going on. the white house informed the next day,and the president the day after that. so how you have an fbi investigation, which whatever went on did involve looking into the matters of general david petraeus, your cia director, and the president isn't informed. this is one of the key questions congress, the congressional committee's concerned, they weren't informed. so expect to see a lot more about this for the next many days. >> barbara, let's talk a little bit more about that. as you mentioned the white house wasn't notified until 5:00 p.m. on election night. the president wasn't told un

a break the no tax pledge. that is a hopeful sign, folks, because a new cnn/orc poll shows more than two thirds of americans believe a trip over that cliff would create major problems, perhaps even a crisis. cnn political editor paul steinhauser is live from washington, d.c. this morning. nice to see you, paul. so the fiscal cliff triggers back-breaking tax hikes and massive spending cuts. you've got more numbers that show what type of budget plan americans actually prefer. >> exactly. one of the big arguments, zoraida, is should it be all spending cuts to get us there or tax increases, as well? brand-new numbers just out from cnn/orc. only about one in three say whatever deal should be struck should be just spending cuts. but almost seven in ten, two thirds of americans say the plan should include spending cuts and tax increases. our poll indicates americans are not so optimistic a deal will get done and if it doesn't get done, who gets the blame? look at this right here, about 45% say republicans in congress will be blamed if there is no deal and the country falls off the fiscal cliff.

for that is lady time. one last thing to keep an eye on in tomorrow's results here is the last cnn poll out of ohio. it's a cnn poll head to head president obama versus mitt romney in ohio. that shows the president ahead. cnn did the same poll in a slightly different way. rather than doing a head to head match up they polled on the other candidates on the ballot. in that poll he still leads by three. obama 47, romney, 44. gary johnson at 5%. jill stein with 1% and vir jill goode pulling in half a percent. that's not in virginia. that's in ohio. maybe half a percent or gary johnson's 5% will mean nothing. maybe ohio won't even be close. when elections are not close nobody remembers who the third party candidates are. when they are close all of a sudden that might be the most important thing in the world. >>> i brought extra clothes to work with me today. see? if it becomes clear tomorrow that we have to be heading out to colorado or ohio or florida for that matter, because it turns out that's where this thing is going to be decided over a period of days and weeks and months instead of it just being

night already. indiana for romney, and cnn is calling kentucky for romney. these are not at all surprising, but i love all calls. i plan to be shouting about them all night long. let me give you some interesting exit polls. again, i talked with governor spitzer about this just a while ago on current. these don't--don't take anything to heart. oh my good i saw an exit poll in hawai'i, and i think this thing is settled no. but it gives you an interesting idea of which way the voters are going overall. on the economy romney wins 51-47. what i get is that he's not leading by much. i think that's interesting. when you look at who they represent, 52% for cnn said romney represent the rich. only 36% said the middle class and i love this. only 2% said the poor. whereas president obama was 10% for the rich. 43% for the mill class and 31% for the poor. that's a breakdown macro-picture that i think will do a lot of good. >> the main question that will stick with me all night is who are those two percent? to think that mitt romney is for the poor? >> they're definitely not the poor. >> you
